The Story

An HR professional recently told us a story of one of her bad hires that we all got a kick out of. The position she was sourcing for was a security job at a local shopping center. The candidate came to her as a recommendation from one of the executives within the shopping center and therefore made it to the front of the pool of possible hires and was brought in to begin his training. Throughout the orientation process this new hire, who turned out to be a black belt in Karate and a former instructor, continuously expressed how unhappy he was with how “gentle” security was required to be with unruly teenagers and suspected shoplifters.

One day towards the end of the training sessions, the “wannabe” ninja stood up and told the class that he knew exactly how to handle these situations. He then picked up the guy sitting next to him, flipped him upside down and body slammed him to the ground. He then followed up by saying, “if he gets back up you just need to drop kick him back down” and then got ready to kick his dazed co-worker.

The Cost

Needless to say, the ninja employee’s actions cost him his new job, but he could have cost his employers much much more. According to a new CareeBuilder survey, 69 percent of employers reported that bad hires lowered their company’s productivity, affected worker morale and even resulted in legal issues.

Forty-one percent of companies estimate that a bad hire costs more than $25,000, and one in four said it cost more than $50,000.
